Florida's Winter Landscaping

Winter in Florida is not brutal, but you do need to prepare your plants. Covering your plant and flower beds with mulch can be beneficial for some hardier plants. However, you should be ready to bring cold-sensitive plants into the house or to cover outdoor plants when temperatures drop. Cover tender plants using cloth, such as old sheets or quilts, burlap, or special covering from local nurseries made for plants. Always avoid using plastic. Plastic will cause condensation to form on the leaves from freezing temperatures, which results in the leaves burning in the sunlight. Continue to water newly planted flowers, trees, and shrubs since it doesn’t rain much during Florida winters. Most of the above-ground plant is dormant. The roots can continue to grow if adequate moisture is present.
